At the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans the 956's swept the leader board, taking every position from 1st through 8th place. Al Holbert's #3 956 had an intense battle with Derek Bell who managed to unlap himself and continue his charge to Holbert's slow and overheating 956. Ultimately in the end, Holbert barely made it to the finish line, but still beating Bell for first place.
